A domain name is the web address of a website. They come in a whole array of extentions. .com, .net, .org. .edu, .us, .tv, .gov .name and .us.com. There are others for other countries, as well.
The most common is the .com. If you're building a business, securing the .net name as well is a good idea. You wouldn't want someone opening a company like yours, with their .net name matching your .com.
.org is usually for non-profit organizations.
.edu for education, .gov for local and federal government agencies.
The rest being add-ons due to the .com name you want already being taken. But they too are slowly taking on an identity.
There are lots of domain companies out there today. Some you can just go through your web hosting company, some have you going straight to the domain company itself. With so many to choose from, which is the right one?
Let's look at the big four domain companies. Network Solutions, Register.com Enom.com and Godaddy. As of this posting you have the following prices and policies:
Network Solutions, the original way to secure a domain name will cost you $34.99 for one year. Finding the cost took 6 clicks, with lots of offers.
Register.com is another of the big three to look at. If you want a domain name from them, the cost is $35. Finding the cost took 3 clicks to find.
Enom is the number 2 domain company. 5 clicks and you get to a login screen. You can not proceed from there until you have an account.
Godaddy.com, you can get a domain name for $10.69 or less/year. You find their prices right on the front page. No searching needed, no giving out your information to get the price. You get the same service, same security, at cheaper price. $10.69 is still the cheapest of the big 4!
Once you have secured your domain name, the next thing you need to buy is Private Registration. What this does for you is it keeps your name, address, email address and phone number out of prying eyes. Whose prying eyes? When someone looks up your domain name, they often check to see who owns it. Spammers will also use this for email spam, and telemarketer's will use it to contact you or your company.
In today's world, this is a must. The price is around $10.99 or so per year for the big four. $10.99/year is a cheap price to pay to keep spam and telemarketers away!
So the big question is who do you use? Our advice is to go with godaddy.com. The best price, the same service and security, but at a much lower cost to you or your company than the other 3 big domain name companies. There is a reason why godaddy.com is the number one domain name company. It just isn't for their Superbowl commercials! It's for the price, the service and for how easy they make it for you to find just what it will cost you without having to leave the front page.
