Becoming Search Engine Friendly
A search engine friendly website will help bring in customers for your target audience. This consists of a few important things.
1) Know your audience. You know what you want to sell, what services you're offering. If you are building a page for fun, this may not be an issue.
2) Use industry terms, product numbers, or ask your friends what would they type into a search engine to find what you are offering.
3) Search engine terms come in 3 flavors:
- Keywords - These are single words that pertain to your target audience. For instance, my target audience is Boston, web, design. In todays world, single keywords aren't as important to a search engine unless it is a product number. So they are thrown at the end.
- Key Word Phrases - These are 2-5 words that make up a phrase which people might type into a search engine to look for you. A keyword phrase for me would be, boston web design.
- Content - This is a 2-3 sentence that describes what it is you do, what you want to sell, or about you.
All of the above are things the world will never see. But the search engines will!
Another important factor to remember is having a naming scheme. In the past if someone clicked on an About Us link, they would go to a page called about.html. While this may seem like the logical thing to do, it isn't in todays world.
Your keyword phrases can make up your current naming scheme. For me that would be changing about.html to, boston_web_design.html.
You would treat the naming of images the same way.
The Title tag is also another place to use the keyword phrases. about boston web design might be something I use in the title. About lets the world know what page they are on, but the boston web design will bring in the search engines.
Lastly, you should try and add in your keyword phrases into the text of the page.
